All people have rights and all people have responsibilities.  What do these words mean?

Rights If you have a right to something it means you should have it with no questions asked.

Responsibilities If you have a responsibility to do something it means that it is up to you, and no one else, to see that it gets done.

Rules We have rules in school to help you keep safe and to focus on your learning.  In your class there will be a chart to help you see if you are not keeping the rules.  This will be a traffic light chart.

You have a right to be treated fairly at school with respect and kindness

You have the responsibility to treat others fairly at school with respect and kindness

This means that you should not make fun of others and no one should make fun of you.  No one should have their feelings hurt or be made to feel embarrassed in front of their friends.  No one should be bullied in any way.

You have the right to be listened to at school

You have the responsibility to listen to others at school

This means that you, and others, may talk freely about your ideas, opinions and feelings.  Anyone can tell their side of the story and they must listen to others telling their side of the story.

You have the right to be safe at school

You have the responsibility to keep yourself and others safe at school

This means that the school should provide safe classrooms, equipment and play areas and you must use these areas safely and tell adults if you find something that is not safe or if you break or spill something.

You have the right to learn in a peaceful environment

You have the responsibility to be part of a peaceful environment

This means that you should not be interrupted by others nor should you interrupt others especially the teacher.  You should do your best work and follow the school rules to help you and everyone else.
